The 77's took on the Innisfil Lakers on Saturday night in Oro-Medonte and lost a heartbreaker 4-3 in overtime. Despite being badly out shot by a total of 24-9 in the first period the 77's found themselves with the 1-0 lead at the end of the first thanks to a powerplay marker by Alex Busvek and the outstanding goaltending of Marco Reptisch.
The second period was a back and forth battle with both teams exchanging offensive chances. Jason Leigh put the 77's up by two with 6:55 left in the period as he was set up on the power play by 77's rookie Nick D'Avolio and captain Sly Spencer on a tic tac toe passing play. The lead was short lived as Lakers captain and former league MVP Jonathan Dew took control of his team and the rest of the 2nd period. He tallied one goal and an assist in the last six minutes of the period to send the teams to the dressing room all knotted up at two.
The third period saw the Lakers take their first lead of the game with a power play goal at 10:57. As time ran down both goaltenders played solid hockey making great saves at either end. With 3:20 left in the third, Lakers forward Jayce Douskey took an ill timed tripping penalty in the offensive end. The 77's smoking hot power play didn't take long to make the Lakers pay for the mistake. Jason Leigh potted his second of the night again from D'Avolio and Spencer.
Both teams had great chances in the overtime. However it was the Lakers that got the lucky bounce on this night. As with only 27 seconds left in overtime Brandon Petrie had a bouncing puck go off him and into the 77's net.
The 77's will travel to Innisfil on Monday Night for another battle with the Lakers and return to the friendly confines of home next Saturday, when they will face the league leading Elliot Lake Bobcats. The last time these two teams met was at the college showcase in Elliot Lake, Where the Bobcats took the 77's 3-1 in what most recruiter's and fans called the best game of the tournament and the best fight of the tournament.
